Changes are being made to the Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes effective January 1, 2023. The American Medical Association (AMA) revised the E&M coding guidelines and code descriptions for many codes.
Some of the significant upcoming changes that are being made effective January 1, 2023, include, but are not limited to the following:
- Introductory coding guidelines revised for hospital inpatient and observation codes, consultation codes, emergency department codes, nursing facility codes and prolonged services codes.
- Deletion of hospital observation codes 99217-99220, consultation codes 99241 and 99251, nursing facility code 99318, and prolonged services codes 99354-99357
- Revisions to code descriptions for hospital inpatient and observation care codes, consultation codes, emergency department codes, nursing facility codes, and prolonged services codes.
- Creation of a “new” prolonged services code to be finalized.
These are only some of the upcoming changes being made by the AMA to the E&M codes in the CPT Codebook.
