In response to a need
for greater coding specificity, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services (CMS) revised the description for place of service (POS) code 02. They
also created a new POS code 10 to address and provide greater specificity for
telehealth services.
Telehealth services
will now be distinguished as where the patient is physically located
when the telehealth service is provided.
The new POS codes for telehealth
services are:
- POS 02 –
Telehealth Provided Other than in Patient Home
The location where health services are provided
or received through telecommunications. The patient is physically not located
in their home when receiving these related health services via telecommunication
technology.
- POS 10 –
Telehealth Provided in Patient Home
The location where health services are provided
or received through telecommunications. The patient is physically in their home
(a location other than a hospital or facility where the patient receives care
in a private residence) when receiving these related health services via
telecommunications technology.
POS code 10 is
effective with dates of service on and after January 1, 2022.
The
Telehealth/Telemedicine Services payment policy will be updated to reflect this
new POS code and available for viewing in 2022.
